Fellowships
Research in the Vatican Film Library is supported by two fellowship programs:
- Vatican Film Library Mellon Fellowship – offered through the Vatican Film Library
- NEH Research Fellowship – offered through the Saint Louis University Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies
VATICAN FILM LIBRARY MELLON FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Research fellowships are available for periods between two and eight weeks in length for projects utilizing the collections of the Vatican Film Library. Applications must demonstrate need to consult the manuscript resources of the library. Topics may include history, philosophy, theology, literature, art, science, etc., in addition to paleography, codicology, illumination, text editing, library history, and other subjects. Fellowships are open (regardless of nationality) to post-doctoral scholars and to doctoral candidates formally admitted to a Ph.D. program working on their dissertations. The fellowship provides the cost of air travel within the continental United States and a living allowance of $2250 per month. This fellowship is supported by the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Applications to the fellowship program should contain:
- a cover letter specifying dates, duration, and title of research project
- a project proposal of not more than 2–3 pages
- a curriculum vitae
- a list of manuscripts or other materials to be consulted and a select bibliography of materials relating to the subject
- for doctoral candidates, a letter of recommendation from their advisor
Fellowships are awarded three times yearly. Completed applications should be submitted by the following deadlines:
- March 1 for research in June to August
- June 1 for research in September to December
- October 1 for research in January to May
