Yearly rankings are clearly described using nine quality indicators: total research and development expenditures, federally sponsored research and development expenditures, number of members of the National Academies among an institution's faculty, number of significant faculty awards earned, doctorates awarded, postdoctoral appointments, SAT scores, size of endowments, and annual giving.
