Maps & Gazeteers
 

Print resources are mostly available in Pius Library.  Search the  Saint Louis Universtiy Libraries Catalog  by subject, Maps or Gazeteers and their subdivisions.  For geography of a specific region search by region name with geography as a subdivision or search for Maps or Gazeteers with the region name as a subdivision.   For example, Maps--United States, Geography--United States, United States--Geography, etc.

Color Landform Atlas of the United States

Produced by Ray Sterner (Space Oceanography Group, Applied Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University), this site provides six maps for each state:  Shaded relief map, County map,  Black and white map, Satellite image, 1895 map (Big: 1.81 Mb, and a PostScript map all  scaled to fit the screen so the map scale varies from state to state.

A very extensive collection of links to maps and mapping information available on the internet.  Created by Roelof P. Oddens at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, this site now seems to be updated and maintained by various faculty from Utrecht University.

Even though this site is an advertisement for a CD-ROM, the maps provided, Europe at the beginning of each century AD1 to AD1700, are useful.

Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection

Collection of both historical and newer maps from the University of Texas at Austin.  Many of the maps were produced by the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Includes a link to Other Maps on the Web which is a list of links to other map services providing various types of maps.

U.S. Gazetteer

From the U.S. Government Census Bureau, this allows you to type in a place and get the population, location in longitude and latitude and zip code(s) of the place.  If you type in a zip code, you get the place name, population, and location in longitude and latitude.  You may choose to get a map of the area where you can then zoom in or zoom out and add features such as highways, railroads, etc.
