LIBRARY ASSISTANT, TECHNICAL SERVICES
DESCRIPTION:
The Technical Services Department is responsible for the acquisition, organization, bibliographic control and physical processing of materials, as well as collection and database maintenance for Pius XII Memorial Library, the Medical Center Library MCL, and the Locust Street Library Facility (LSLF).
PURPOSE:
Under general direction, perform collection maintenance activities at the Locust Street Library Facility including shelving, shifting, inventory, transfers and withdrawals. Provide quality control and perform database maintenance in the SLU library catalog to accurately reflect item and holdings information.
- Perform all activities related to collection maintenance and inventory of the LSLF: retrieve, shelve and shift material, perform inventory-related activities such as shelf-reading and searching for missing material, update records and locations in the local catalog as necessary (35%).
- Participate in database maintenance and quality control for bibliographic, item, holdings, and authority records for LSLF, Pius, MCL, and Madrid. Reconcile duplicates, transfers and withdrawals and update records appropriately (25%).
- Serve as a backup to LSLF document delivery staff, scan articles requested for SLU and Mobius patrons, prepare requested books for delivery to other libraries, etc. (20%).
- Perform physical processing of new material, type labels, prepare books for shelving or transfer by circulation. Review processed books for accuracy (10%).
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned by unit or Department supervisors (10%).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years college coursework; bachelors degree from an accredited higher education institution preferred. Ability to work with foreign languages desired. Two years experience in library acquisitions, cataloging, or related work area, ability to work with complex library-related systems, such as Innovative Interfaces (III) Millennium and OCLC desired. Attention to detail, high degree of accuracy, and analytical skills required. Ability to perform tasks associated with shelving, shifting, and retrieval of library materials from stacks, cabinets, and deliveries (e.g., routinely lift 20-50 pounds, climb ladders, push loaded book trucks, bend, reach, etc.) required. |
