This guide identifies resources relevant to the study of anti-slavery movements in the U.S.  Call numbers pertain to collections in Pius XII Memorial Library. It is not comprehensive and should be considered a starting point for research in this area.

A collection of more than 1,200 articles and editorials and over 470 cartoons and engravings as depicted in thirteen major newspapers of the 19th century.

A compilation of published and unpublished slave autobiographies, narratives and interviews.  The emphasis of this series is on the creation of a black community under slavery. Volumes 2 - 17 offer documents grouped by State.

Anti-Slavery Propaganda in the Oberlin College Library.

The collection consists of American Anti-Slavery Propaganda published before January 1, 1863. It also includes a small collection of pro-slavery literature and of British anti-slavery propaganda. An author catalog is available on top of the microfiche cabinet along with a limited classified catalog.  You will also find catalog records for the pamphlets in MOBIUSLibrary Catalog.  The catalog will not indicate SLU holdings, but you would be able to use the author guide to find the fiche number for an item you locate in MOBIUS.

Black Abolitionist Papers, 1830-1865.

Seventeen reels of microfilm and 1 guide. Approximately 15,000 documents written by nearly 300 black abolitionists. Includes correspondence, speeches, sermons, lectures, articles, essays, editorials, receipts, poems, and other documents. There is also a 5 volume print edition of selections from these papers (E449 .B624 1985).

An edited account of congressional proceedings, including debates, records of votes, full text bills, and undelivered texts which members can have appended to the Record. Also includes a Daily Digest of congressional activities with a subject index.

The Niles Register:  Cumulative Index, 1811 - 1849.  1990.

The Niles Register was one of the largest circulating newspapers of the early 19th century.  The index contains more than 380,000 references to newsworthy persons and places in the newspaper.  The index is available on CD-ROM.  The Niles Register itself is located in the St. Louis Room on Level 3 of Pius library.

Slave Narratives. 2000. In-library access at computers A & B in Reference Room.

This CD-ROM provides fully searchable text for more than 2,300 narratives of former slaves. Most of the narratives were recorded by researchers for the Works Progress Administration from 1936-1938. The original documents are housed in the Library of Congress.

The Southern Black: Slave and Free. 1970.
     Ref. E 185 .T46 1970
A bibliography of anti-slavery and pro-slavery books and pamphlets, and of social and economic conditions in the southern states from the beginnings to 1950.  You will need to use interlibrary loan for most items in this catalog. Some titles may be found in the Oberlin collection described on this list.

U.S. Congressional Serial Set
Currently contains materials from the 15th Congress - 69th Congress, 1st Session, 1817-1926; Serial Set Vols. 1 - 7957 (with House documents from the 66th, 2nd and 3rd sessions (1919 - 1921) as well as private bill reports from the 67th, 1st and 2nd sessions currently unavailable) .  When complete, this digital version of the U.S. Congressional Serial Set contains U.S. Senate and House of Representatives reports, documents, and journals published between 1817 and 1980 (15th through 96th Congresses).  During the pre-Civil War period of the early 19th Century, key Executive Department documents were also included in the Serial Set.  Content is multidisciplinary covering political, social, cultural, and military history, international relations, and business and industrial development.

FINDING BOOKS USING THE SLU LIBRARIES CATALOG


Search the SLU Libraries Catalog to find books in the Saint Louis University libraries. If you are unable to find what you need, search MOBIUS, a library catalog that contains the holdings of over fifty college and university libraries in Missouri.

The following words indicate primary source material and can be found in subject headings or used as part of a keyword search on a topic.  Also, remember to search for important persons as authors as well as subjects.

FINDING 19TH CENTURY ARTICLES USING DATABASES


Remote access to article databases is available only to SLU students, faculty, and staff.

19th Century U.S. Newspapers - 1800-1900
Newspapers included are from cities and rural areas spread throughout the United States.  

Chicago Tribune (ProQuest Historical Newspapers) - 1849-1986
Each issue includes the complete newspaper cover-to-cover with full-page and article images.

New York Times (ProQuest Historical Newspapers) - 1851-2004
Each issue includes the complete newspaper cover-to-cover with full-page and article images.

Periodicals Index Online - 1665-1995
Indexes the articles in over 4,000 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences from their first issues to 1995. Hundreds of journals are available in full text in the complementary database, Periodicals Archive Online. The focus is on 20th century periodicals. However, periodicals in the 20th century that extend back into the 17th, 18th, & 19th centuries are indexed from their earliest volumes. The scope is worldwide and includes journals in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and other Western languages.

19th Century Masterfile - 1802-1920
Covers nearly all periodicals of the late eighteenth through early twentieth century.

Covers the world's scholarly literature on the history of the United States and Canada.  Includes abstracts of articles and citations to book reviews and dissertations.

Humanities Full Text - 1984-present
Indexes and/or abstracts over 600 humanities periodicals. Full text is available from approximately 230 journals.

JSTOR
This archival journal resource provides full-text access to over 500 journal titles, including many history journals. Note that the last 1 to 7 years of each journal are not available in this resource.

Project Muse
This electronic journal collection provides full-text access to over 250 scholarly journals, including many history journals.
