BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Compiled by Lori Calcaterra and Chet Bunnell
Maintained by John Montre, Engineering Liaison Librarian
Last updated: December 3, 2007

This guide identifies resources for Biomedical Engineering found in the libraries of Saint Louis University and on the Web.  This guide is not comprehensive; rather it should be supplemented with other guides for Pius Library such as Aerospace Engineering & Technology, Electrical Engineering, General Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Call numbers pertain to locations within Pius XII Memorial Library (if no location is indicated) or the Medical Center Library.

LIBRARY CATALOGS

The Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog is available on computers throughout the library, or with unrestricted access via the Internet. Access the catalog through the Saint Louis University Libraries home page. Searching can be expanded to include the MOBIUS holdings, the consortium which includes the Washington University Libraries and most of the other academic libraries in Missouri.

Many "Other Libraries" also are accessible via the Pius homepage.

Books, periodicals and other materials in Pius XII Memorial Library are arranged by Library of Congress classification (call) numbers.  The broad classification for biomedical engineering is:

R 856-857

Biomedical Engineering
TA 164 Bioengineering
TA 165  Engineering Instruments

DATABASES, INDEXES AND BIBLIOGRAPHIES

Access to the following resources is available to anyone in Pius Library.  "In-library access" means that access is available in the Reference Department.  Those resources identified as being available via "remote access" are on the Web.  Note:  Remote access is available on-campus, through a SLU PPP account, and via SLU Proxy Access. (Restricted to current SLU students, faculty, and staff.)

Updated daily.  This multidisciplinary database provides indexing and abstracting for 8,040 journals (6,679 are peer-reviewed) with over 4,060 in full text.  Of the peer-reviewed journals 3,529 are full text.  Covers subjects found in college and university curriculums.

Applied Science & Technology Index/Abstracts.  October 1983- .  In-library and remote access.  Also available in paper format.
Updated weekly.  Includes full text of every article from over 100 publications back to 1997, in addition to abstracts for articles back to 1993 and indexing for 480 publications back to 1983.

ArticleFirst.  1990- .  FirstSearch.  In-library and remote access.
Updated daily.  Indexes articles from approximately 12,500 journals and magazines covering the subjects of science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture.  Most articles are available by mail or fax for a fee using a credit card; however, Pius Library may own the journal or you may request the article through Interlibrary Loan.

Biological Abstracts.  1980- .  Ovid.  In-library and remote access.
Updated quarterly.  Provides comprehensive and international coverage of articles about biological and biomedical research including agriculture, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, ecology, microbiology, pharmacology, and zoology.  Routinely monitors almost 7,000 periodicals.
