This guide identifies resources for aviation science, safety, management and history found in the Reference Department of the Pius XII Memorial Library and on the Web.  Call numbers pertain to locations within Pius XII Memorial Library.
 
LIBRARY CATALOGS


The Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog is available on computers throughout the library, or with unrestricted access via the Internet. Access the catalog through Saint Louis University Libraries home page. Searching can be expanded to include the MOBIUS holdings, the consortium which includes the Washington University Libraries and most of the other academic libraries in Missouri.

Many "Other Libraries" also are accessible via the Saint Louis University Libraries.

Books, periodicals and other materials in Pius XII Memorial Library are arranged by Library of Congress classification (call) numbers.  The broad classifications for aviation topics are:

Air Transport Association of America
Membership includes major U.S. air carriers.  Links to the full-text of the Airline Handbook, giving a brief history of aviation, deregulation, structure of the industry, airline economics, safety, airports and air traffic control.  The site also provides limited statistics on air travel.

Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. (EAA)
Membership organization consisting of 155,000 individuals interested in sport and recreational flying.

General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA)
National trade association represents manufacturers of fixed-wing aircraft, engines, components and avionics.

International Air Transport Association (IATA)

DATABASES AND INDEXES

Access to the following resources is available to anyone in Pius Library.  "In-library access" means that access is available in the Reference Department.  Those resources identified as being available via "remote access" are on the Web.  Note:  Remote access is restricted to current SLU students, faculty and staff.

ABI/INFORM. 1971- .  Proquest.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated daily.  Indexes and abstracts more than 1,300 journals and trade publications in all areas of business and management, many with an international focus.  Full text is available for more than 600 of the periodicals.

Academic Universe.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated continuously by Lexis-Nexis.  Provides good coverage of aviation in the General News section.  Indexes many aviation magazines and newsletters in full-text editions.

Aerospace & High Technology Database.  1986- .  In-library and remote access.
     Updated monthly.  Provides worldwide bibliographic coverage of published and unpublished scientific and technical literature in aeronautics and astronautics.  Articles from more than 1,600 periodicals from worldwide sources are scanned in addition to conferences, books, published and unpublished report literature, theses and patents.  Approximately 60,000 new records are added each year.  The database is the electronic equivalent of two print publications:  International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA) and NASA's Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR). IAA (1961- ) is available in Pius Library at TL 500 .I57 (most recent five years Ref.).  STAR (1963-1995) is available in Pius Library at TL 500 .S35; and later editions are only online (http://www.sti.nasa.gov/Pubs/star/star.html)   While the database is primarily of interest to aerospace engineers, it also covers many aviation safety and human factors topics.
     A search aid for the Aerospace & High Technology Database or its print equivalents is the NASA Thesaurus (2 vols., shelved with IAA at Ref. Z 695.1 .A25 1994).

Applied Science & Technology Index/Abstracts.  October 1983- .  Wilson.  In-library and remote access.  Also available in paper format.  
     Updated weekly.  Includes full text of every article from more than 100 publications back to 1997, in addition to abstracts for articles back to 1993 and indexing for 480 publications back to 1983.

ArticleFirst. 1990- .  FirstSearch.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated daily.  Indexes articles from approximately 12,500 journals and magazines covering the subjects of science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities and popular culture.  Most articles are available by mail or fax for a fee using a credit card; however, Pius Library may own the journal or you may request the article through Interlibrary Loan.

Aviation Week Newsletter 1997- .  In-library and remote access.

A paper index to articles in approximately 60 aviation periodicals.

Business & Company Resource Center.  1980- .  Gale.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated daily except Sunday.  Indexes approximately 1,000 business journals and trade/industry publications, as well as 200,000 full-text company directory profiles and over 50,000 full-text investment reports.

Dissertations & Theses : Full Text.  1861- .  ProQuest.  In-library and remote access.  
     Updated monthly.  Indexes dissertations and masters theses produced in accredited North American colleges and universities from 1861 forward and from international universities since 1988.  Abstracts are present for some dissertations beginning in 1973 and masters theses from 1988. Includes 24-page previews for many dissertations and full text for over 930,000 dissertations from approximately 1996 to present.

PapersFirst. 1993- .  FirstSearch.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated 24 times per year.  Indexes papers from every congress, conference, exposition, workshop, symposium, or meeting received at the British Library.  Indexes some aviation conferences.

Produced by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, National Transportation Library, this database indexes more than 400,000 books, journal articles and technical reports on transportation research from the 1960s to the present.

     Updated daily.  This database includes all types of library materials cataloged by libraries that contribute their records to OCLC, the U.S. national database.  Use to search for books, recordings, etc.  This index will not locate journal articles.

International non-profit safety organization.

Joint University Program for Air Transportation Research
Describes an FAA-NASA-sponsored program conducted by researchers at three universities to improve the efficiency, performance and safety of air transportation in the United States.

Nall Report
Written annually by Bruce Landsberg, an AOPA Pilot monthly columnist, this is a review of the prior year's accidents involving fixed-wing general aviation.

U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
Search for accident reports by date, place, aircraft make/model, or cause [general site search].  Perhaps the most important site for the aviation safety student.

University of Texas at Austin-Human Factors Research Project
A great site for those researching CRM and human factors.  Many publications of the researchers are available online.

White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security
Included is the Commissioner's Report and much background material.
