This guide identifies resources for Aerospace Engineering and Technology found in the Reference Department of Pius XII Memorial Library and on the Web. This guide is not comprehensive; rather it should be supplemented with several other guides for Pius Library such as Aviation, General Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and  Mechanical Engineering.  Call numbers pertain to locations within Pius XII Memorial Library.  
 
LIBRARY CATALOGS


The Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog is available on computers throughout the library, or with unrestricted access via the Internet. Access the catalog through the SLU Libraries home page. Searching can be expanded to include the MOBIUS holdings, the consortium which includes the Washington University Libraries and most of the other academic libraries in Missouri.

DATABASES AND INDEXES


Access to the following resources is available to anyone in Pius Library. "In-library access" means that access is available in the Reference Department.  Those resources identified as being available via "remote access" are on the Web.  Note:  Remote access is restricted to current SLU students, faculty, and staff.

Aerospace & High Technology Database.  1986- .   In-library and remote access.  Updated four times per year.  Provides worldwide bibliographic coverage of published and unpublished scientific and technical literature in aeronautics and astronautics.  Articles from more than 1,600 periodicals from world wide sources are scanned in addition to conferences, books, published and unpublished report literature, theses, and patents.  Approximately 60,000 new records are added each year.  The database is the electronic equivalent of two print publications: International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA) and NASA's Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR).  IAA (1961- ) is available in Pius Library at TL 500 .I57 (most recent five years Ref.).  STAR (1963-1995) is available in Pius Library at TL 500 .S35; later editions are only online (http://www.sti.nasa.gov/).
     A search aid for the Aerospace & High Technology Database or its print equivalents is the NASA Thesaurus (2 vols., shelved with IAA at Ref. Z 695.1 .A25 1994).  Information about the thesaurus is also available online at http://www.sti.nasa.gov/thesfrm1.htm.

Applied Science and Technology Index/Abstracts Full Text.  October 1983-  . WilsonWeb.  In-library and remote access.  Also available in paper format.
     Updated monthly.  Includes full text of every article from almost 100 publications back to 1997 in addition to abstracts for articles back to March 1993 and indexing for approximately 480 publications back to October 1983.  Subject coverage includes engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer technology.  Includes articles, interviews, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, and new product reviews/announcements.

ArticleFirst.  1990- .   FirstSearch.  In-library and remote access.  
     Updated daily. Indexes articles from approximately 12,500 journals and magazines covering the subjects of science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture.  Most articles are available by mail or fax for a fee using a credit card; however, Pius Library may own the journal or you may request the article through Interlibrary Loan.

Aviation Week Newsletters.   In-library and remote access.  
     Updated daily.  Includes the electronic editions of several McGraw-Hill aviation newsletters.  There is a searchable archive covering two years.

Dissertation Abstracts.  1861- .  Ovid.  In-library and remote access.  
     Updated monthly.  Indexes dissertations and masters theses produced in accredited North American colleges and universities from 1861 forward and from international universities since 1988.  Abstracts are present for some dissertations beginning in 1973 and masters theses from 1988.

Compendex. 1980- .  Engineering Village.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated monthly.  The premier interdisciplinary engineering database in the world, providing abstracts and full bibliographic citations from worldwide engineering and technical literature that encompasses all engineering disciplines, as well as related fields in science, and management.  The entries are drawn from more than 2,600 published journals, conference proceedings and individual conference papers, technical reports, monographs, and other materials.  Be sure to check out the online thesaurus. The print counterpart is Engingeering Index.

PapersFirst1993- .  FirstSearch.  In-library and remote access.  
     Updated 24 times per year.  Indexes papers from every congress, conference, exposition, workshop, symposium, or meeting received at the British Library.

     Updated 24 times per year.  Includes references to every congress, conference, exposition, workshop, symposium, or meeting volume received at the British Library.

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Publications & Standards Database.  In-library access.
     Provides comprehensive coverage of all of the SAE's technical publications, including standards, specifications, articles, books, and all technical papers since 1906.

Web of Science®.  1995-  .  ISI.  In-library and remote access.  
     Updated weekly.  Includes thousands of research journals from hundreds of disciplines.  Do a Cited Reference search by Cited Author, Cited Journal Title, or Cited Year or do a General Search by Author, Journal Title, or Address such as institution name, city, country, or even zip code.  The Web of Science consists of Science Citation Index Expanded®, Social Sciences Citation Index®, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index®.

WorldCat.  FirstSearch.  In-library and remote access.  
     Updated daily.  This database includes all types of library materials cataloged by libraries that contribute their records to OCLC, the U.S. national database.  Use to search for books, recordings, etc.  This index will not locate journal articles.

Incomplete Guide to Airfoil Usage
This site attempts to list the airfoil(s) used in the wing design of a particular aircraft.

U.I.U.C. (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) Airfoil Data Site
Includes the Airfoil Coordinates Database, which describes more than 1,000 airfoils.  The site also links to several other airfoil sites.

Wing Analysis Program
A graphical program written in Java which computes the lift and C1 distribution over a wing with sweep and twist.

U.S. NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR AERONAUTICS (NACA)


NACA was established by an act of Congress, approved March 3, 1915.  The Committee was abolished by an act approved July 29, 1958; its functions were transferred to the newly established National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

U.S. NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA)


NASA was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958; it is the successor to NACA.

Most of the NASA documents series at Pius Library are shelved in Government Documents (Lower Level for paper or Serials for microfiche) by SUDOC (Superintendent of Documents) numbers.  Three series are cataloged and shelved on Level 5:

SEARCHABLE ONLINE DATABASES FOR NASA REPORTS

NASA Center for Aerospace Information Technical Reports Server
The NASA Scientific and Technical Information Server/ NASA Center for Aerospace Information (CASI) database contains bibliographic citations and abstracts for publicly available documents, journal articles, and conference proceedings in the broad areas of aerospace, aeronautics, and related fields.  Citations are retrieved from the NASA RECONplus database.  Coverage of NASA-produced technical reports is from 1915; open literature coverage is from 1970.

NTRS: NASA Technical Reports Server
Provides access to NASA generated and sponsored scientific and technical literature from the first reports of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1917 to present as well as reports and articles from non-NASA aerospace sources including the Physics eprint server (arXiv), BioMed Central, the Energy Citation Database (from the U.S. Department of Energy), and Aeronautical Research Committee reports from the MAGiC project. There are currently over 540,000 records and many full-text reports covering all aspects of aerospace-related research.

NASA Historical Archive
Excellent NASA site providing valuable information on the history of space missions. Includes a chronology of aerospace events.

NASA Human Spaceflight
This site offers space news, real-time data, space station and space shuttle information, and space images.

NASA Tech Briefs
Accessible from this site are both domestic and international "tech briefs" which describe innovations developed by NASA and its industry partners.  The associated "technical support packages" explain the technology in greater detail.  Included is a simple search capability.

Selected Current Aerospace Notices (SCAN)
SCAN is an electronic current awareness journal published twice monthly by NASA Entries are arranged by 191 topic areas.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS


American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (A.I.A.A.)
The Web site provides information on membership, meetings, publications, organizational structure, and career services for A.I.A.A. members and others; it also includes a searchable database of A.I.A.A. meetings papers (1992- )

A.I.A.A. Meetings Papers Searchable Citation Database 1992 to Present
Updated quarterly, the database contains author, title, paper number, conference date and location information for papers presented at A.I.A.A. meetings from 1992 forward. Note:  The papers are also indexed in the Aerospace & High Technology Database and International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA).  Pius Library had a subscription to AIAA meetings papers on microfiche from 1992-97.  They are filed in numerical order in a cabinet in the Serials Dept. on the second floor of the library.  Any papers not already owned can be ordered for SLU faculty, staff and students.  See your liaison librarian.

The AHS is the prime professional association for those interested in vertical flight

American Society for Engineering Education
Multidisciplinary society committed to advancing excellence in all aspects of engineering and engineering technical education.

Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (P.A.M.A.)
Association of aviation maintenance professionals, together with other individuals, educational institutions and businesses involved in aviation maintenance.

SAE International
The Society of Automotive Engineers homepage provides information about the publications, meetings, and other activities of a major association involved in all forms of self-propelled vehicles, on land or in the air.  Note:  Pius Library has the SAE Publications and Standards Database available for searching and the printed SAE Transactions (TL 1 .S6), as well as other SAE publications.

Aerospace Industries Association of America, Inc.
Represents U.S. manufacturers of commercial, military and business aircraft, helicopters, aircraft engines, missiles, and spacecraft.  The Web site provides links to 56 member companies as of March, 2000, as well as links to government agencies and organizations in the aerospace industry.

Air Transport Association
Links to the full-text of the Airline Handbook, giving a brief history of aviation, de-regulation, structure of the industry, airline economics, safety, airports, and air traffic control.  The site also provides limited statistics on air travel.

General Aviation Manufacturers Association
Represents general aviation manufacturers before federal and state government agencies; promotes the air transportation environment.

National Space Society
Promotes change in social, technical, economic, and political conditions to advance the day when people will live and work in space.

Space Frontier Foundation
The Foundation is an organization of people dedicated to opening the space frontier to human settlement as soon as possible.

Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC)

Careers in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering

Compressible Aerodynamics Calculator
This calculator, written in Javascript by William Davenport at the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department, Virginia Tech, computes the standard relations for compressible flow of a perfect gas.

The CPIA Propulsion Database
The database covers 25 years of propulsion technology research; more than 16,000 citations are included.  It is maintained by the Chemical Propulsion Information Agency.

Global Positioning System Overview
