Welcome to the Art History Resource Guide. This guide is intended to help students find basic and/or general
information resources for subjects within the field of Art History available from Pius XII Memorial Library.
This guide is divided into three main categories: Books, Articles, and General Web Resources.
The Books section is organized chronologically by historical period or culture. Each of these sections offers
a selection of books on that topic under two categories. The first category is "Reference Books," which are
books that can be consulted when authoritative information or definitions are needed, or when you need to be
pointed in the direction of further resources. The second is "Histories & Overviews," which lists books that
cover the most basic elements that entail that period or culture. Some of these books are refered to as survey
books as they survey a period/culture or an important element from that period/culture.
The Articles section lists resources that are meant to help you find articles within the field of art history
or a related discipline. This list contains primarily article databases that can be searched online.
The General Web Resources section is not meant for guiding you to research resources, but instead contains a
list of websites that can be consulted for basic information. For example, links that are included direct you
to the College Art Association (the professional association of art historians and art educators), an art and
architecture thesaurus from the Getty Institute, and an art dictionary from ArtLex, among other sources. Please
feel free to peruse the list of links provided.
If you have any questions or need assistance finding additional resources, please contact
Mikael Kriz, the Art History liaison at Pius XII Memorial
Library.
