Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog.  In-library and remote access. 
     Search the catalogs of Pius XII Memorial Library, Medical Center Library, Omar Poos Law Library, and the Madrid Campus Library. If you are unable to find what you need, search MOBIUS, a larger consortium that includes SLU libraries, Washington University Libraries, and other academic libraries in Missouri.  Requests for circulating materials held at MOBIUS libraries usually arrive at Pius Library in two days.

     Updated daily. This database includes all types of library materials cataloged by libraries that contribute their records to OCLC, the U.S. national database.  Use to search for books, recordings, etc. This index will not locate journal articles.

AcademicSearch Premier . 1975-  .  EBSCOhost.  In-library and remote access.
      Updated daily.  This multidisciplinary database that includes education provides indexing and abstracting for 8,040 scholarly journals from various fields and has full text for over 4,060 beginning as far back as 1975. 6,679 journals are peer reviewed.

Dissertation Abstracts.  1861-.  Ovid.  In-library and remote access. 
     Electronic version of Dissertation Abstracts International below.  Indexes North American dissertations and theses from 1861 and international dissertations from 1988.

Education Full Text.  1983- .  WilsonWeb.  In-library and remote access.
      Electronic counterpart of Education Index below, except that over 200 journals are full text beginning 1994 and later.  Full-text start date varies with journal.

ERIC.  1966- .  CSA.  In-library and remote access.
      Updated monthly.  Indexes journals found in CIJE and documents found in RIE.  Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, it is the principal index for access to the educational literature and is the electronic equivalent of Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) and Resources in Education (RIE).  A free version provided by the U.S. Department of Education and containing 80% of the ERIC Documents (EDs) from 1993 to the present is also available.

From UNESCO, this database covers topics such as policy, finances, higher education evaluation, issues, curricula, and more.

LexisNexis Academic.  Start date varies by publication.  LexisNexis.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated continuously.  A subset of LEXIS-NEXIS.  Provides online access to full-text of current and historical court cases, news sources, business and financial information, and international news and company information.

PIO (Periodicals Index Online)PAO (Periodicals Archive Online).  1665-1995 & 1802-1995 respectively.  Chadwyck-Healy.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated four times a year.   Periodicals Index Online (PIO) indexes the articles in over 4,000 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences from their first issues to 1995.   As of December 2005, over 500 journal titles are at least partially available in full text in the complementary database, Periodicals Archive Online (PAO).  The focus is on 20th century periodicals.  However, periodicals in the 20th century that extend back into the 17th, 18th, & 19th centuries are indexed from their earliest volumes.  The scope is worldwide and includes journals in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and other Western languages.

PsycINFO.  1967- .  Ovid.  In-library and remote access.
    Updated monthly.  Electronic version of Psychological Abstracts below.   Indexes literature in psychology journals, books and chapters of books.  Journal coverage begins 1967.  Books and chapters of books coverage begins 1987.  Also includes Historic PsycINFO, 1872-1966.

Saint Louis Post-Dispatch.  1989- .  NewsBank.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated daily.  Access to archival articles back to 1989.  Go to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Web site for late-breaking news and articles available only on their Web site.  Another point of access for this newspaper is Academic Universe.

SearchERIC.org.  1966- .  Free Web Resource.

This was formerly available from the ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation.  It is now running on a privately owned, located, and operated server not affiliated with the official government ERIC sites.  You may search ERIC (RIE+CIJE) or just ERIC Digests.  Please read the instructions for using this search system.

Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI).
     In Web of Science.  1995-  .  Thomson/ISI.  In-library and remote access.

This database provides author and subject indexing for articles published worldwide in social science journals.  It also supports citation indexing, which establishes links between cited articles and the more recent publications in which they are cited.

Sociological Abstracts.  1963- .  CSA.  In-library and remote access.
     Print version.  1952-2001.  Ref. HM 1 .S67
This database abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related social and behavioral science disciplines such as education and psychology.  It provides abstracts of journal articles and citations to book reviews from over 1,800 serials, and also abstracts of books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference papers.  Journal records added since 1973 article abstracts.  Many records from key sociology journals published since 2001 also include the references cited in the bibliography of the source article.  Each individual reference may also have links to an abstract and/or to other papers that cite that reference.

Pius Library maintains a significant collection of journals for higher education.  They can be found in several ways.

  • Search Saint Louis University's E-Journal Portal by journal title to find electronic journals available to Saint Louis University students, faculty, and staff.

A finding tool to locate journals and newsletters available electronically on the Internet.  Includes an alphabetical list in addition to a search utility.  Records located are announcements posted on the NewJour mailing list that include a link to the journal's or its publisher's home page.  Some journals provide tables of contents with selected full text.  A subscription may be required to access full text.

The Futures Project:  Policy for Higher Education in a Changing World

Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, begun in 1999, this group believes that institutions of higher education need to become more "responsive, innovative, accountable, and accessible." They are committed to "stimulating informed debate" among all stakeholders and developing policies to enable higher education to respond to change required by competitive market forces including the growing number of new providers, "globalization of the sector, the rapid advance of new technologies, and shifting demographics."  (text from site 8/08/03)  This site ceased its work on March 31, 2005.  All material will remain available until February 2008.
