LOCATING PERIODICALS

Although more full-text articles are available online now, you still will need to find many articles by locating the print publication in the library. As with books, the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog is your first stop when you want to determine if the library subscribes to a particular journal, magazine or newspaper title.

Although you can request books from other MOBIUS libraries, you cannot request journals or individual articles through MOBIUS.  Search only Saint Louis University libraries when you search for journal, magazine, and newspaper titles.  When using the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog to find a periodical title, please remember to choose the Journal Title search option.

These records illustrate the information found in a Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog record for a periodical publication.   Periodical records contain a lot of information about the publication. You need to know if the library has the particular volume you need and where it is located in the library. This information is contained in the box directly below the Title and Published information.

SELF TEST:

1. Like books, periodicals are shelved by call number.  Look at the print record for National Geographic magazine.  What is the call number for this periodical?

GB1 .N27
G1 .N27
G3 .N47
GA457 .N37

2. Look at the National Geographic record from the previous question.  Directly below the call number you will see "Library Has".  This statement tells you the year and volume numbers of the first issue received by the library and indicates by a hyphen (-) that the library is still receiving the title.

What years of National Geographic does Pius Library have?

September 2002 only
1959 - (still receiving)
1960-1964 only
