Please consult your department's liaison librarian and the staffs of the Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence and the SESC Writing Center for additional resources, assistance in educating students about this complex topic, and--if needed--means of plagiarism detection. Remember: Engaging students about plagiarism issues may be the most effective strategy we can use to prevent it!

| Defining Plagiarism -- Plagiarism is a difficult concept to define because there are numerous types (e.g., failure to cite sources appropriately, purchasing a paper from a term paper mill) and because some acts of plagiarism are deliberate while others are inadvertent. Institutional policies--even policies of units within a single institution--vary widely, not only in their response to acts of plagiarism but in the definition itself.
