ENVISIONING LIBRARY AS PLACE
Collections in academic research libraries double in size every 15 years. Nearly all academic research libraries in the United States—including Jesuit institutions—have renovated and expanded their library facilities or built new libraries within the last 10 years.
Saint Louis University Libraries are committed to creating research, teaching and study destinations for the University community.

Goal 1: Create and maintain user-centered research, teaching, and learning environments.
  • Establish continuous space allocation program, recognizing that information resources and library collections constantly change and grow.
  • Modernize Libraries to accommodate users’ needs.
  • Establish a centralized resource center to provide access to legacy collections.
  • Implement the CLEAR Focus Project.
As the scholarship of students and faculty become more technologically dependent and socially integrated, the Library’s role as place in intellectual inquiry and communication becomes more evident.

THE LIBRARIES' ROLE IN ACADEMIC ENTERPRISE
The primary role of the university library in a research (all forms of scholarly activity and discovery: funded-, unfunded-research, scholarship, and creative) environment is to connect users with information. Librarians teach users to effectively search for, locate, and analyze information in all forms. They also ensure that rare and unique materials are accessible in perpetuity.
Goal 1: Optimize access to information resources that support research and scholarly activity.
  • Restructure the allocation of support for information resources.
  • Maximize use of Libraries’ resources through effective implementation of technologies.
  • Attract and retain the best and brightest Library faculty and staff with in-depth subject knowledge and interdisciplinary experience.
Goal 2: Establish ideal conditions for preservation and access to the University’s rare and unique research collections.
  • Modernize archive, preservation, and exhibition environments.
  • Digitize University Libraries Special Collections, the Vatican Film Library, and the University Archive.
  • Expand public programs in special collections and academic conferences.

COMMUNITY-ENGAGING OPPORTUNITIES
The faculty and staff of University Libraries live the mission of the University through the facilitation of research and discovery and preservation of rare and unique materials. To sustain and advance this work, University Libraries must attract support from the greater community.
Goal 1: Enhance the visibility of the University Libraries.
  • Raise the awareness of information resources, library services, and special collections.
  • Leverage advances in technology to communicate, collaborate and innovate.
Goal 2: Attract support and build resources.
  • Increase opportunities for sustainable funding and community engagement.
  • Vigorously pursue grant and foundation support.
  • Partner with University Advancement Division.
Goal 3: Enrich the academic community.
  • Partner with affinity groups and cultural institutions.
  • Stimulate discourse and analysis of the libraries’ impact on the University experience.
UNLOCKING THE LIBRARIES' POTENTIAL
University Libraries strive for excellence in the fulfillment of their mission to build and preserve collections, to inspire discovery and investigation into ideas and issues, past and present. Exploration and consideration of librarianship and the role of information resources within Universities is encouraged and respected. University Libraries are committed to creating dynamic learning environments and unlocking the scholarly, professional, and human potential of all those who seek it.

Goal 1: Develop a dynamic learning organization.
  • Examine organizational culture.
  • Adapt and apply an Appreciative Inquiry model.
  • Demonstrate successful leadership of an academic unit.
  • Establish an executive advisory board.
