Requesting Unavailable Books

Recalls

All books are subject to recall.  It is rarely necessary to recall a book that has been checked out to another patron.  It is usually faster to request another copy of the book online through MOBIUS or Interlibrary Loan, though a book needed for Reserve Room use will be recalled immediately.  A book may be recalled from another borrower after it has been on loan for a minimum of ten days.  Recalled book due dates will automatically change to precede the original due date.  Except in rare circumstances, books on loan for 21-day periods are not recalled.  When a recall notice is received, the book is to be brought to Pius Circulation promptly.

Other MOBIUS libraries may recall their books at any time.

Holds

Copies with an "Available" status at Pius Library cannot be held. Only books with status "In Process", "At Bindery", "In Repair", "Date Due", or "On Hold" can be placed on hold.  The holds can be placed online by the requestor or at the Circulation Desk in person.

When requesting, the first available copy in the SLU or MOBIUS catalogs will be sent for the requestor. When the book is received at Pius Library, the requestor will be notified to pick up the book at the Circulation Desk.

A book on hold for another patron cannot be renewed.

If a book has more than one hold on it , the normal check-out period may be shortened to serve the greatest number of patrons.

Searching Books
If a book cannot be located in the general collection, a patron can request a search by filling out a search request card at the Circulation Desk.  When found, the book will be held at the Circulation Desk for the patron and the patron will be notified.  If the book is not found within 5 working days, the patron will be notified.  If the patron still requires the book, the Circulation staff will request a copy of the book through Interlibrary Loan or the MOBIUS system.

Request Item Function
The Request Item function allows a current Saint Louis University student, faculty or staff to request online a book owned by another MOBIUS library.  When the book is received at Pius, the requestor will be notified to pick up the book at Pius Circulation. For service and policy information regarding Request Item function go to:  http://libcat.slu.edu/search/k

For questions about Pius Library Circulation services and policies, e-mail Circulation at piuscirc@slu.edu, call (314) 977-3087 and ask to speak to a full-time staff member, or visit the Circulation Desk and ask to speak with a full-time staff member.
